Bioactive Granular Activated Carbon (BioGAC) for ex-situ aerobic degradation of vinyl chloride

Start date: Jun 1st, 2015
Finish date: Jan 13th, 2017

Test of stimulated aerobic degradation of vinyl chloride in granular activated carbon (GAC) vessels.

Oxygen and nutrients were added in-line before the GAC vessels in an exisiting pump-and-treat facility to stimulate degradation of problematic chlorinated compounds, including cis-DCE and vinyl chlorid (VC).

The study showed biological degradation of VC, which was previously the first compound to break through the GAC vessels. The longevity of the GAC vessels was thus extended.

Project type: Operation

Project target: Groundwater
